From Security Guard to Successful Security Professional

"I can make over $100K in the security field?

No way!"

That's what my students at Northeastern University used to say to me when I told them the average salary of a Security Director.

Many people start out in the security field as a Security Guard or Security Officer. They typically see this position as a stepping stone to become a police officer, public safety professional, or just to pay the bills.

However, so many of these Security Guards and Officers don't know what career paths are available to them and how to access them.

I was once in this position when I started out as a Loss Prevention Associate catching shoplifters at Sears. I wanted to be a cop- not a security professional. I had no idea what career paths were available to me in the security field and how rewarding they could be.

I eventually took a chance on exploring my options beyond just becoming a cop and eventually landed my first leadership role as the manager of the same Loss Prevention Department I started out at several years prior.

Fast forward to today and I have over 20 years of security experience under my belt, I'm the Director of Security for an amazing organization, I'm a security consultant, and former adjunct faculty for the University I once dreamed of attending.
